Traditional Al-Assah performances are captivating visitors at the ninth Al-Atawilah Heritage Festival in Saudi Arabia's Al-Baha Region, where reenactments of the historic village guards are bringing centuries-old customs back to life.
Dressed in faithfully recreated traditional uniforms, performers stage military-style marches, rhythmic chants and whistle calls that reflect the daily duties once carried out by Al-Assah, the village guards responsible for maintaining security in local communities.
Festival organisers have recreated the guards' original attire to preserve historical authenticity. The uniforms include olive-green trousers, matching shirts, belts and ghutras, complemented by military boots and replicas of the government-issued rifles historically carried by the guards.
The performances have become a popular attraction, with many visitors stopping to take photographs with the performers and learn more about the important role Al-Assah played in safeguarding villages in earlier generations.
Beyond the heritage displays, the festival offers a wide range of cultural and entertainment activities designed for visitors of all ages. The programme highlights Al-Baha's rich traditions while promoting the region as a destination where history, nature and traditional arts come together.
The annual festival forms part of broader efforts to preserve Saudi Arabia's cultural heritage and showcase the unique identity and historical legacy of the Al-Baha Region.
