Indonesia has begun accepting applications for its Global Citizenship of Indonesia (GCI) program, a new scheme designed to grant an unlimited stay permit for former Indonesian citizens and people of Indonesian descent, according to a senior immigration official.
Indonesia does not allow dual citizenship for adults. Instead, the GCI initiative aims to offer a long-term alternative—allowing eligible foreigners with Indonesian roots to live and work in the country indefinitely, as Jakarta looks to strengthen ties with its global diaspora.
Edy Eko Putranto, Director General for residence permits, said at least five people have already registered for the program ahead of its planned launch on January 26, though applications will be processed only after a review process.
“We are involving a team to make those reviews first. We have to find out whether these many people are eligible or not,” Edy was quoted as saying by state news agency Antara.
He did not identify the applicants, but outlined the eligibility scope. The GCI program is open to former Indonesian citizens, as well as their children and grandchildren. Spouses of Indonesian citizens may also apply, along with children born to marriages between an Indonesian citizen and a foreign national, the official said.
