Travellers passing through Dubai International Airport (DXB) will soon enjoy faster and smoother security checks, as new technology will eliminate the need to remove laptops and liquids from hand luggage.
According to Essa Al Shamsi, Senior Vice President for Terminal Operations at Dubai Airports, the initiative is part of a phased upgrade plan to replace current hand and hold baggage screening systems.
“This will allow us to move away from the current regulations, which require removing laptops and liquids,” Al Shamsi said in an interview with Khaleej Times.
The full installation of the advanced security systems is expected to be completed by May 2026, Emarat Al Youm reported.
Dubai Airports is currently testing state-of-the-art scanners and artificial intelligence (AI) technologies that enable passengers to keep electronic devices and liquids — even those over 100ml — inside their bags during screening.
In May 2025, Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects awarded a contract to Smiths Detection to install these next-generation checkpoint systems across all three DXB terminals. The goal is to enhance security, operational efficiency, and passenger flow.
These new scanners generate high-resolution 3D imaging, allowing faster and more accurate inspections.
“The introduction of this new technology will make travel easier, smoother, and stress-free,” Al Shamsi added.
With record-breaking passenger traffic — 46 million travellers in the first half of 2025, up 2.3% year-on-year — Dubai Airports is investing in smart solutions to handle continued growth. The airport processed 22.5 million passengers in the second quarter alone, marking its busiest first half in history.
Currently, the new screening technology is being trialled at Terminal 3, which serves Emirates Airlines. The rollout will involve replacing around 140 handheld machines, requiring significant infrastructure upgrades.
Al Shamsi also revealed that Dubai Airports is developing AI-powered systems to reduce aircraft turnaround times and further enhance operational efficiency, reinforcing DXB’s position as one of the world’s leading aviation hubs.
