Jordan is set to strengthen its air links with Russia as Royal Jordanian (RJ) prepares to launch a direct route between Moscow and Aqaba on December 20.
The Aqaba Special Economic Zone Authority (ASEZA), Royal Jordanian and the Jordan Tourism Board (JTB) signed an operational support agreement on Tuesday to establish the service, according to the Jordan News Agency, Petra. The airline will operate two flights per week between the Russian capital and the Jordanian coastal city.
Thabet Nabulsi, ASEZA commissioner for tourism and youth affairs, said the initiative supports the authority’s strategy to expand Aqaba’s international connections, attract more visitors and generate economic and tourism growth.
He described Russia as an important potential source market, highlighting Aqaba’s coastal attractions and its proximity to prominent destinations such as Petra and Wadi Rum.
Royal Jordanian Chief Commercial Officer Karim Makhlouf said the new service represents a major step in expanding the airline’s operations from Aqaba. It will be the city’s first long-haul international route and Royal Jordanian’s fourth direct international destination from Aqaba, joining Cairo, Riyadh and Abu Dhabi.
Makhlouf said the route, developed in partnership with ASEZA and the JTB, is intended to attract more tourists and position Aqaba as a gateway to Jordan’s wider tourism offerings.
The initiative forms part of ASEZA’s broader strategy to expand international air connectivity and reinforce Aqaba’s standing as a regional centre for tourism and investment.
The new flights are expected to improve access to the city’s coastal and marine attractions, diving sites, hotels and resorts. They will also make it easier for visitors to combine stays in Aqaba with trips to other destinations across Jordan.
Tourism-related businesses, including hotels, restaurants, transport operators and commercial services, are expected to benefit from increased visitor spending. The initiative could also support employment and wider private-sector activity.
ASEZA said it would continue collaborating with public and private sector partners to secure more direct air services, diversify tourism source markets and establish Aqaba as a year-round gateway for tourism and economic activity.
