The UAE has introduced new income-based requirements for residents seeking to sponsor family members or friends on visit visas, according to updated rules from the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP).
Under the revised system, sponsorship eligibility now depends on the sponsor’s monthly salary and the degree of relationship with the visitor. Residents can invite relatives up to the third degree or friends, provided they meet the set income thresholds and furnish proof of kinship.
According to the ICP guidelines:
- First-degree relatives (father, mother, spouse, son, daughter): Minimum salary of AED 4,000 per month.
- Second-degree relatives (siblings, grandparents, grandchildren): Minimum salary of AED 8,000 per month.
- Third-degree relatives (uncle, aunt, cousins): Minimum salary of AED 8,000 per month.
- Friends (non-relatives): Minimum salary of AED 15,000 per month.
Applicants must also submit a valid passport (minimum six months) and a return flight ticket when applying for a visit visa.
The updated requirements are part of a broader ICP reform aimed at enhancing transparency, supporting economic diversification, and attracting skilled talent to the UAE.
New Visa Durations and Categories
The ICP has also clarified the duration and extension powers of visit visas, introducing six types of permitted stays to simplify application procedures.
Four new visit visa categories have been created for specialists in artificial intelligence, entertainment, events, cruise operations, and leisure vessels.
Additionally, a humanitarian residence permit will be issued for one year, renewable upon approval. The rule also enables foreign widows and divorced women to obtain or renew residence permits without a sponsor, subject to specific conditions.
Business and Transport Visas Updated
A new business exploration visa now allows entrepreneurs to establish or invest in UAE-based companies, provided they demonstrate financial solvency or professional credentials.
Foreign truck drivers can also obtain single or multiple-entry visas, provided their sponsoring company meets financial and insurance requirements and the applicant holds valid health coverage.
ICP: Supporting Innovation and Economic Growth
Major General Suhail Saeed Al Khaili, Director General of the ICP, said the latest amendments were based on extensive studies of current and future residency trends across local, regional, and international contexts.
He noted that the updates aim to enhance quality of life, strengthen trade and transport, and support technological and creative sectors, reinforcing the UAE’s position as a competitive global hub.
