Boeing has delivered the first 737 MAX aircraft to Somon Air, marking the arrival of the first aircraft of its type in Tajikistan and advancing the airline’s fleet modernization and international expansion plans.

The newly delivered Boeing 737-8 is the first of two aircraft that Somon Air is leasing from Dubai Aerospace Enterprise (DAE). The aircraft will strengthen the carrier’s fleet while providing greater operational efficiency and enhanced range capabilities.

Somon Air Chief Executive Officer Abdulkosim Valiev said the addition of the 737-8 will enable the airline to expand its route network by taking advantage of the aircraft’s extended range and improved fuel efficiency. He added that the carrier values its longstanding partnership with Boeing and intends to continue modernising its fleet with next-generation aircraft.

The Boeing 737-8 will serve short- and medium-haul routes connecting Central Asia with destinations across Europe, the Middle East and Asia. The aircraft is also expected to support Somon Air’s planned expansion into new markets, including London, Beijing and Guangzhou.

Firoz Tarapore, Chief Executive Officer of Dubai Aerospace Enterprise, said the delivery marks an important milestone for both Somon Air and Tajikistan. He noted that the aircraft is the first of a two-aircraft leasing agreement and reaffirmed DAE’s commitment to providing modern, fuel-efficient aircraft to airline partners worldwide. DAE Capital currently owns more than 190 Boeing 737 MAX family aircraft.

Designed as one of the most versatile variants in the 737 MAX family, the 737-8 can accommodate up to 210 passengers, depending on cabin configuration, and has a range of up to 3,500 nautical miles (6,480 kilometres). Boeing said the aircraft reduces fuel consumption and carbon emissions by approximately 20% compared with the previous-generation models it replaces.

Paul Righi, Boeing's Vice President of Commercial Sales and Marketing for Eurasia, India and South Asia, said the delivery reflects Somon Air’s continued evolution from a regional airline into an expanding international carrier. He added that the 737-8 is well suited to support the airline’s long-term growth strategy.

The delivery follows an agreement announced last year under which Somon Air committed to acquiring up to 14 Boeing aircraft, including 787 Dreamliners and additional 737 MAX jets, as part of its long-term fleet renewal programme.

Fujairah International Airport and GODOBA Travel and Tourism have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to establish a framework for cooperation aimed at enhancing travel services, improving the passenger experience and supporting the airport’s commercial and operational growth.

The agreement was signed by Ebraheim Alqallaf, Deputy Director-General of Fujairah International Airport, and Raad Al Abri, Chief Executive Officer of GODOBA Travel and Tourism, during a ceremony in Fujairah.

Under the MoU, the two parties will explore joint initiatives to increase passenger traffic through Fujairah International Airport, promote existing routes and destinations, and develop integrated travel and tourism opportunities.

Areas of cooperation will include sharing market insights, supporting destination and route development, promoting travel services and exploring digital solutions that improve access to travel information and booking services.

The partnership will also examine opportunities to strengthen regional air connectivity and support Fujairah’s development as both a business and leisure destination.

Alqallaf said the agreement would help the airport work more closely with the travel and tourism sector to improve passenger services and support stronger connectivity.

Al Abri said the MoU provides a foundation for cooperation in travel services, digital solutions, destination development and passenger engagement.

The partnership is intended to support sustainable passenger growth, improve travel services and strengthen Fujairah’s position within the regional tourism and aviation market.

Royal Jordanian Airlines and Air China have signed a memorandum of understanding in Beijing to strengthen air transport cooperation between Jordan and China and expand connectivity between the two markets.

The agreement was signed on the sidelines of King Abdullah II’s visit to China, according to a statement issued by Royal Jordanian on Saturday.

The memorandum covers expanded commercial and operational cooperation, greater competitiveness in international markets and potential new air routes between the two countries.

As part of the agreement, the airlines will examine codeshare opportunities on several key routes and seek to make greater use of their respective hubs in Amman and Beijing. The arrangement is intended to provide passengers with more travel options and smoother connections across the two carriers’ networks.

The two airlines will also explore cooperation in areas including interline agreements, product and service training, brand promotion and operational support.

Their cooperation will extend to ground handling, air cargo and in-flight catering at their respective hubs, with the aim of maintaining high service standards.

Royal Jordanian Vice Chairman and CEO Samer Majali said the agreement was an important step in the airline’s strategy to strengthen its presence in China and the wider Far East, describing Air China as a strategic partner.

Majali said Beijing could serve as a gateway to wider Asian markets, while Amman plays an important role as a hub for the Levant. He added that deeper commercial cooperation and potential codeshare arrangements could help expand Royal Jordanian’s network and improve passenger connectivity.

He also highlighted the importance of the partnership in supporting the planned direct air route between Amman and Beijing.

Qu Guangji, General Manager of China National Aviation Holding Corp. and President of Air China, said the two airlines already have an established relationship and significant potential to deepen their cooperation.

Qu said Air China would fully support Royal Jordanian’s plans to launch nonstop flights between Amman and Beijing. He added that stronger cooperation could contribute to tourism, business and cultural exchanges between Jordan and China.

The memorandum is expected to provide fresh momentum to aviation cooperation and the development of the air transport markets in both countries.

Royal Jordanian and Air China plan to continue expanding their partnership, with the longer-term objective of creating a stronger air link between Jordan and China and supporting greater travel, trade, tourism and people-to-people exchanges.

Qatar Airways has become the first airline in the world to operate Starlink-equipped Boeing 787-9 aircraft, further expanding its position as the operator of the world’s largest Starlink-enabled widebody fleet.

The airline has also completed the installation of Starlink connectivity across its Boeing 787-8 fleet in seven months, bringing the total number of Starlink-equipped widebody aircraft in its fleet to 150.

Qatar Airways said it remains on schedule to complete Starlink installation across its entire Boeing 787 fleet by the end of 2026.

The latest milestone follows the airline’s completion of Starlink rollouts across its Boeing 777 fleet in nine months and Airbus A350 fleet in eight months. Qatar Airways now operates what it describes as the world’s first and largest Starlink-equipped fleets of the Boeing 777, Airbus A350 and Boeing 787.

Starlink-equipped aircraft offer passengers Wi-Fi speeds of up to 500 Mbps, allowing them to work, communicate, access online services and stream content while in flight.

Qatar Airways was the first airline to introduce Starlink connectivity on long-haul and ultra-long-haul services across six continents. The complimentary, gate-to-gate connectivity is being expanded across its global network, covering destinations in the Americas and Australasia, as well as major gateways in Africa, Asia, Europe and the Middle East.

Since launching Starlink onboard in October 2024, more than 23 million passengers have used the service across more than 86,000 Qatar Airways flights.

The airline said its Starlink widebody installation programme has now surpassed 83% completion, with as many as 323 Starlink-equipped flights operating each day.

The expansion is part of Qatar Airways’ broader effort to make high-speed onboard connectivity a standard feature of its passenger experience and allow travelers to remain connected throughout their journeys.
