Saudi Arabia has implemented a new requirement for travelers to obtain prior authorization before carrying controlled medications containing narcotic or psychotropic substances into or out of the Kingdom.
The rule, effective Saturday, Nov. 1, applies across all land, air, and sea ports and forms part of national efforts to support passengers with medical needs while ensuring secure and compliant travel procedures.
The Saudi Food and Drug Authority (SFDA) recently detailed the framework governing the entry and exit of controlled drugs in line with local regulations and international standards.
Under the rules, travelers must declare any controlled medications and secure official clearance in advance. The measures are designed to enhance public health safeguards and regulate the movement of sensitive pharmaceuticals.
Travelers can apply for permits via the SFDA’s Controlled Drug System (CDS) platform, where they must create a personal account and submit relevant documents, including a prescription, medical report, trip information, and proof of identity.
The system allows the addition of multiple medications with full details such as trade name, active ingredient, concentration, dosage form, and quantity.
Applicants must confirm compliance with terms and conditions before submitting their request. Permit status can be monitored through the CDS platform, labeled as “Submitted,” “Completed,” “Rejected,” or “Incomplete,” and approved permits can be printed directly from the system.
The initiative underscores Saudi Arabia’s commitment to facilitating medically necessary travel while maintaining strict control over narcotic and psychotropic substances in transit.
