Emirates, the world’s largest international airline, celebrated 25 years of service to Uganda with a special commemorative flight and aircraft showcase at Entebbe International Airport.
Since launching operations in 2000, Emirates has transported more than 2.8 million passengers on 15,900 flights between Dubai and Entebbe, connecting Uganda to its extensive global network.

The airline’s journey in Uganda began with three weekly flights linked to Nairobi and later Addis Ababa, before becoming a direct service in 2007. In 2015, Emirates upgraded the route with the Boeing 777-200LR, boosting capacity by 12%. Today, the airline operates a three-class Boeing 777-300ER, remaining the only international carrier offering First Class service in and out of Entebbe.
In recent years, Emirates has strengthened its partnership with the Uganda Tourism Board (UTB) to promote Uganda as a leading travel destination. Joint campaigns have spotlighted the country’s scenic landscapes, wildlife, adventure sports and cultural heritage across key Emirates markets. The collaboration has helped drive a 16% rise in passenger numbers on the Dubai-Entebbe route since January 2025, with notable growth from the U.S., China, India, the U.K., Thailand and the Middle East.

Beyond aviation, Emirates has also invested in local communities. In 2024, the airline’s “Dubai 7s for Good” CSR initiative raised over UGX 587 million to support North Road Primary School — funding new sports facilities, solar-powered water stations, and upgraded infrastructure.
To commemorate the milestone, Emirates operated a one-off special flight featuring its newly refurbished four-class Boeing 777. The aircraft, part of Emirates’ US$5 billion retrofit programme, showcases next-generation cabin interiors, including the Premium Economy cabin—presented to Ugandan audiences for the first time.

The event was attended by key Ugandan aviation and tourism officials, including General Edward Katumba Wamala, Minister of Works and Transport; Fred Bamwesigye, Director General of the Uganda Civil Aviation Authority; and Rashid Alardha, Emirates Vice President for Sub-Saharan Africa.
During a static tour of the aircraft, guests explored Emirates’ upgraded First, Business, Premium Economy, and Economy cabins — complete with in-flight dining displays and a full range of passenger amenities.
“Uganda is not only a key market on our network but one of our most loved destinations in Africa,” said Mohamed Taher, Emirates Country Manager for Uganda. “Over the last 25 years, we’ve built strong ties with our partners and customers, and we’re proud to continue supporting Uganda’s growing tourism and aviation sectors.”
The retrofit programme, managed entirely by Emirates Engineering, has already upgraded 72 aircraft—36 A380s and 36 Boeing 777s—with all destinations, including Uganda, set to be served by refurbished aircraft by 2026.
