A Saudia Airlines flight from Jakarta (Indonesia) to Madinah (Saudi Arabia) was diverted to Thiruvananthapuram International Airport on Sunday evening following a medical emergency onboard, airport authorities confirmed.
According to officials, Saudia flight SV821, which had 395 passengers and 18 crew members, made the unscheduled landing after a passenger, later identified as Lia Fatonah (37), an Indonesian national, lost consciousness mid-flight. The aircraft’s captain contacted Air Traffic Control (ATC) in Thiruvananthapuram, requesting an emergency landing clearance.
Emergency medical teams and ambulances were kept on standby as the Boeing aircraft touched down safely at around 7:00 p.m. The passenger was immediately evacuated and rushed to Ananthapuri Hospital, located about 5 km from the airport, under police escort to ensure quick access through evening traffic.
Hospital sources said the woman was brought in with severe chest pain and breathing difficulty. “She is under observation in the emergency unit. ECG and blood tests have been conducted to determine the cause of her condition,” a hospital spokesperson said, adding that her condition was stable but being closely monitored.
Airport officials praised the quick coordination between the airline crew, ATC, CISF personnel, and airport medical teams, which ensured the passenger received timely assistance. After completing medical evacuation procedures and refueling, the flight resumed its journey to Madinah at approximately 8:30 p.m.
Officials noted that such in-flight medical diversions, though uncommon, are handled as part of the airport’s standard emergency response protocol, which includes 24-hour readiness for medical and technical contingencies.
