As the travel season approaches and long weekends beckon, many Qatar residents are preparing for their next getaway. But before you head to Hamad International Airport, there are several important travel updates you need to know from new baggage restrictions and entry systems to airline route changes and airport transitions.
Here’s a quick guide to the five major travel changes that could affect your upcoming trip.
1. New checked baggage rules for travelers

Travellers flying to or via the United States should note that cordless hair straighteners, curling irons, and flat irons containing lithium batteries are no longer permitted in checked baggage. These items must be carried in hand luggage, safely covered, and switched off to prevent accidental activation.
Meanwhile, South Korea has also tightened its rules — banning curling irons with non-removable batteries unless set to “flight mode” and approved by the airline.
2. EU introduces new border Entry/Exit system

Starting October 12, the European Union will implement its new Entry/Exit System (EES) at all Schengen Area borders. The system replaces manual passport stamping with digital registration for non-EU nationals entering for short stays (up to 90 days within 180 days).
The new rule does not apply to EU citizens, Schengen residents, or holders of long-term visas and residence permits.
3. Power banks, vapes banned from hand luggage

Qatar Airways has issued an advisory prohibiting passengers from bringing specific Anker power banks onboard following product recalls. Banned models include:
- A1647, A1652, A1681, A1689, A1257, and A1642 (various recall dates).
Passengers may bring other power banks, e-cigarettes, or vapes only in carry-on baggage, but must not charge them during the flight. Safety covers should also be used to prevent overheating or accidental activation.
4. Qatar Airways Expands Routes and Increases Flights

Recently crowned the World’s Best Airline for the ninth time, Qatar Airways continues expanding its network for the winter season. New and increased flights are being added across 18 U.S. destinations, including Boston, Cleveland, Minneapolis, and Washington Dulles — plus a new route to Las Vegas coming soon.
The airline’s latest codeshare partnerships with Aer Lingus and LEVEL (part of IAG Group) will further enhance connectivity between the Middle East, Europe, and North America.
5. Qatar Airways Moves Operations to New Airport in Cambodia

Travellers flying to Phnom Penh, Cambodia, should note that Qatar Airways flights now operate from the new Techo International Airport (KTI), replacing the old Phnom Penh International Airport (PHN). The modern facility offers expanded services and smoother transit for passengers.
Be sure to double-check your booking details before departure to avoid confusion at the airport.
With these new travel rules and upgrades, Qatar’s aviation landscape continues to evolve rapidly making journeys more efficient but also requiring passengers to stay informed. Whether you’re planning a short break or a long-haul adventure, a little preparation can help ensure your next trip goes off without a hitch.
