Saudia Airlines has conducted its first fully internet-enabled flight, marking a major milestone in the national carrier’s digital transformation and setting a new benchmark for in-flight connectivity in the region. The trial forms part of a pilot programme designed to test performance and collect passenger feedback before a full rollout.
Once launched commercially, the high-speed internet service will be offered free of charge to all passengers, positioning Saudia among the few global airlines delivering seamless, high-bandwidth digital access onboard.
According to the airline, the system currently offers speeds of up to 300 Mbps, with the capability to exceed 800 Mbps — enabling uninterrupted browsing, live streaming, virtual meetings, and multi-device use at cruising altitude.
During the test flight SV1044 at 35,000 feet, Minister of Transport and Logistic Services and Chairman of Saudi Arabian Airlines Corporation Saleh Al-Jasser, along with Saudia Group CEO Ibrahim Al-Omar, demonstrated the system's performance by streaming a Saudi Pro League match, conducting a live television interview, and holding a video call with Minister of Communications and Information Technology Abdullah Alswaha.
Al-Jasser noted that high-speed internet is no longer a luxury but an essential capability for modern aviation and a strategic pillar in Saudi Arabia’s aviation sector transformation. He directed teams to accelerate deployment across Saudia’s full fleet.
Nearly 20 aircraft are already equipped with the system, with the airline confirming full-fleet integration as part of a phased expansion to include all current and incoming aircraft.
The initiative underscores Saudia’s commitment to enhancing the passenger experience and embracing cutting-edge technologies, aligning with the Kingdom’s broader digital transformation and aviation modernization goals.
