Riyadh’s King Khalid International Airport (KKIA) is set to undergo its most extensive transformation in more than four decades, as Riyadh Airports Company prepares to roll out a sweeping strategic development plan beginning in the first quarter of 2026. The overhaul comes as Saudi Arabia’s capital continues its rapid expansion under national aviation and tourism growth strategies.
The initiative introduces a comprehensive operational and organizational restructuring aimed at improving efficiency, enhancing the passenger journey, and supporting Riyadh’s long-term vision as a global travel hub.
A key element of the transformation is a major reallocation of operations across airport terminals, following a detailed redesign that preserves the airport’s original architectural identity. Under the new structure:
- Terminal 5 will be dedicated to international flights operated by foreign airlines.
- Terminals 3 and 4 will exclusively handle domestic flights.
- Terminals 1 and 2 will continue to serve international routes operated by Saudi national carriers.
Airport officials say the reorganization will significantly increase terminal capacity, streamline passenger flow between facilities, reduce waiting times, and elevate the overall travel experience.
A final implementation date will be confirmed once all airlines and airport partners complete required preparations and readiness checks.
Riyadh Airports, working closely with the General Authority of Civil Aviation (GACA) and Airports Holding Company, emphasized that the terminal revamp forms part of a broader strategy to enhance service quality and operational performance at the Kingdom’s capital airport. The upgrades are also aligned with Saudi Arabia’s aviation ambitions, which aim to position Riyadh as one of the leading international gateways in the region.
