RwandAir has officially resumed flights to Mombasa, Kenya, after a six-year hiatus, marking a significant milestone for both the airline and the region. The new route, which connects Kigali, Zanzibar, and Mombasa, is set to enhance regional tourism and provide greater connectivity between East African nations.
The Rwandan flag carrier, which suspended its Mombasa service in 2019, will now operate four weekly flights to the coastal city. This resumption not only strengthens the link between Rwanda and Kenya but also offers landlocked countries like Rwanda and Burundi easier access to Mombasa’s beautiful beaches and the vibrant Zanzibar island.
Speaking in Mombasa after the first flight landed, RwandAir’s official, Mr. Caunhye, highlighted the positive impact of this renewed service on regional tourism. He noted that this route will significantly benefit both leisure and business travelers by providing greater ease of travel across East Africa. “With the new route, we expect to boost business opportunities, as RwandAir’s code-share agreement with Qatar Airways allows seamless connections to a wide range of international destinations,” Mr. Caunhye said.
RwandAir currently operates in 41 destinations across the globe, and with new agreements being made, the airline plans to expand its network further. Mr. Caunhye added that the airline’s ambition is to increase flight frequency and introduce even more destinations in the coming months as part of its growth strategy.
The return of RwandAir to Mombasa and the addition of Zanzibar to its route map are seen as vital steps in the airline’s “ambitious growth journey,” positioning it as a key player in connecting East Africa and beyond.
