Riyadh Air has partnered with IBM to develop what they describe as the world’s first AI-native airline, designed from day one without legacy IT systems and optimized around artificial intelligence across all core operations.
The collaboration, announced at IBM Think Riyadh 2025, aims to use AI to transform both guest experience and employee workflows, setting a new benchmark for digital innovation in global aviation.
Riyadh Air is working with IBM Consulting, which is drawing on its aviation expertise, broad partner ecosystem and IBM watsonx Orchestrate to help the carrier operate as an AI-native enterprise from the outset. IBM Consulting has coordinated 59 workstreams and more than 60 partners, including Adobe, Apple, FLYR and Microsoft, to execute the airline’s end-to-end technology strategy through its AI-powered delivery platform, IBM Consulting Advantage.
With initial flights already underway and the first full commercial service expected in early 2026, the three-year collaboration between Riyadh Air and IBM has reached a key milestone.
“We had a clear choice — be the last airline built on legacy technology or the first built on the platforms that will define the next decade of aviation,” said Adam Boukadida, Chief Financial Officer of Riyadh Air. “With IBM, we’ve stripped out fifty years of legacy in a single stroke. Riyadh Air isn’t just built for today; it’s built for the future and creating a pathway for many airlines to follow.”
Riyadh Air plans to reimagine how its teams work and interact with passengers by embedding generative AI and agentic AI into daily workflows, creating a synchronized environment where people and technology work together to deliver smoother, more personalized journeys.
Mohamad Ali, Senior Vice President of IBM Consulting, said Riyadh Air is “setting a new blueprint” for modern, adaptive enterprises:
“By embedding AI into the very foundation of its operations, Riyadh Air is redefining what’s possible in aviation, and it’s been a privilege for IBM to help make that vision a reality.”
For travelers and the wider tourism ecosystem, the partnership positions Riyadh Air as one of the most digitally advanced airlines to enter the market, with AI expected to play a central role in everything from booking and disruption management to onboard service and post-trip engagement.
