Vietnam’s largest passenger aircraft currently in service is set to make a landmark landing at Long Thanh International Airport, marking a major technical step as the new hub moves closer to welcoming commercial flights.
A Vietnam Airlines Boeing 787 widebody is scheduled to depart Tan Son Nhat Airport in Ho Chi Minh City—about 40 km away—and land at Long Thanh at 3:30 p.m. on Monday for a technical test flight. The trial forms part of the final checks before the airport begins handling passenger services on December 19.
The Boeing 787 is the biggest jet in operation among Vietnamese airlines, with a maximum capacity of roughly 340 passengers. For this test, the aircraft is carrying only flight crew and technical staff, and is expected to return to Ho Chi Minh City shortly after landing.
The technical flight will run through a full sequence of departure, approach, and landing procedures, helping evaluate operational coordination between Tan Son Nhat and Long Thanh, two key aviation gateways for southern Vietnam.
Authorities said teams including air traffic controllers, technical units, meteorological staff, flight procedure teams, and search-and-rescue forces have completed extensive training and shift planning under operational manuals approved after multiple rounds of assessment. The preparations follow standards set by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) and the Civil Air Navigation Services Organisation (CANSO).
Earlier, on December 10, the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam inspected simulator-based training for Long Thanh air traffic controllers, including drills for severe weather, navigation system failures, and in-flight emergencies. The review found that coordination and response capabilities met operational requirements.
According to Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) deputy CEO Nguyen Tien Viet, core infrastructure—such as the runway, apron, air traffic control tower, and technical systems—has been completed, alongside basic ceremonial preparations.
If the December 15 technical flight meets all safety and performance benchmarks under the Ministry of Construction’s plan, Long Thanh is expected to welcome its first three passenger flights on December 19. Aircraft operated by Vietnam Airlines, Vietjet Air, and Bamboo Airways are scheduled to land about five minutes apart.
Phase 1 of Long Thanh International Airport covers 1,810 hectares and has been under construction since January 2021. It is designed to handle 25 million passengers and 1.2 million tons of cargo annually, with full commercial operations targeted for mid-2026.
