Qatar Airways has confirmed a reduction in its flights to San Francisco for the summer 2026 season, scaling back operations by nearly 30%. Starting in late March 2026, the airline will operate five weekly flights between Hamad International Airport (DOH) in Doha and San Francisco International Airport (SFO), down from a previously planned daily service.
The airline first launched flights to San Francisco in December 2020, a notable move given the global aviation slowdown at the time. Since then, Qatar Airways had maintained daily service to the city, even during challenging periods like the pandemic. However, the upcoming summer schedule will be the first to see a reduction in frequency, with flights only operating on Mondays, Tuesdays, Thursdays, Saturdays, and Sundays.
This cut makes San Francisco the only U.S. destination in Qatar Airways’ network without a daily service and marks it as the airline’s least-served U.S. city. Despite the reduced frequency, the flight times will remain optimal for long-haul connections, especially for passengers traveling onward to South Asia. The outbound flight will depart Doha in the morning, arriving in California by early afternoon, while the return leg will depart later the same day.
Qatar Airways will continue to use the Airbus A350-1000 on the San Francisco route, which features a total of 327 seats per flight, including 46 QSuite business class seats and 281 economy seats. Despite the frequency reduction, the airline has not downgraded the aircraft, indicating continued confidence in premium demand.
Passenger traffic data shows a slight decline in demand on the Doha-San Francisco route, with lower seat load factors during the 2025 summer season. This, coupled with growing competition from carriers like Emirates and several European airlines, likely influenced the decision to reduce capacity. The move could help Qatar Airways stabilize load factors and optimize yields on this ultra-long-haul route.
While the summer 2026 schedule represents a temporary adjustment, Qatar Airways plans to resume daily service during the winter 2026-2027 season. The airline’s ongoing evaluation of this reduced schedule will determine whether the adjustments extend beyond the summer period, depending on route performance and competitive dynamics.
