Saudia (SV), the national airline of Saudi Arabia, is set to launch a new era in narrowbody long-haul air travel with the introduction of Airbus A321XLR aircraft, equipped with a newly designed, fully flat business class product. The new aircraft will elevate passenger comfort on medium and long-haul routes to key destinations in Europe, the Indian subcontinent, and Africa.
Announced in May 2023, Saudia's new business class configuration will feature 24 Thompson VantageSOLO seats, offering fully flat beds and direct aisle access for each passenger. These seats are designed to provide both privacy and ease of movement, making them ideal for long-haul travel. The airline has ordered 15 Airbus A321XLRs, with the first deliveries now expected in 2026 due to delays in the A321XLR program.
The Airbus A321XLR is an extended version of the popular A321neo, offering an enhanced range of up to 4,700 nautical miles, making it ideal for thinner long-haul routes where widebody aircraft are not cost-effective. The new fleet will operate to destinations including Barcelona, Brussels, Milan, Rome, Dakar, and the Maldives, with services set to start from May 2026.
The new A321XLRs will be configured with a premium 144-seat layout, consisting of 24 business class seats and 120 economy seats. Saudia's business class cabin will feature the Thompson VantageSOLO seats, which are designed with a herringbone layout and offer ample personal space, large in-flight entertainment screens, and privacy for each passenger. Although not configured as reverse herringbone, the VantageSOLO seats are still highly competitive, offering a comfortable and private flying experience.
Bulkhead seats will offer additional space, comparable to JetBlue’s Mint Studio suites, though standard VantageSOLO seats will also provide significant comfort and privacy. Saudia’s branding will be reflected in custom finishes, aligning with the airline's identity.
The introduction of the Airbus A321XLR is part of Saudia's broader fleet modernization plan, in line with Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 objectives. This move allows the airline to expand its route network cost-effectively, focusing on destinations where narrowbody aircraft can provide an optimal balance of comfort and efficiency.
While the VantageSOLO business class product is not the most revolutionary on the market, it significantly enhances Saudia’s narrowbody offerings, raising the bar for passenger comfort on medium and long-haul routes.
As Saudia continues to grow its fleet and services, the A321XLR will play a crucial role in the airline's mission to provide world-class travel experiences while supporting Saudi Arabia's economic and tourism growth goals.
