Qatar Airways Cargo says it will re-center dedicated freighter operations at Doha International Airport (DIA)—Doha’s former main gateway—starting in the second quarter of 2026, as part of a broader plan to improve hub efficiency and ease pressure on Hamad International Airport (HIA).
The airline said the move is intended to decongest HIA, which has seen strong growth in passenger volumes and belly-hold cargo traffic following the completion of its Phase B expansion in early 2025.
Under the new setup, freighter aircraft will increasingly operate from DIA, positioning the older airport as a specialised cargo platform for e-commerce, livestock, and heavy-lift shipments, while HIA remains the primary hub for passenger connectivity and premium belly-hold integration.
Dual-airport strategy
Mark Drusch, Chief Officer Cargo at Qatar Airways, described the return to DIA as a strategic decision designed to protect apron capacity at HIA for high-frequency passenger connections—particularly as the airline prepares for Boeing 777-8 Freighter deliveries in 2027 and expands its cargo joint business with partners including IAG and MASkargo.
He noted DIA’s hardstand space supports quicker freighter turnarounds without competing with heavy passenger traffic.
The transition is expected to begin with a phased relocation of regional GCC feeder flights and high-volume e-commerce routes from Europe and Asia. Qatar Airways Cargo said the approach mirrors dual-airport cargo models used in major cities such as Tokyo and London.
