Bangladesh has officially reinstated the US dollar (USD) as the headline currency for setting passenger and cargo fares for all domestic and foreign airlines operating flights from the country, reversing a previous directive that required fares to be set in Bangladeshi taka (BDT).
The decision was announced through a notification from the Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism, which confirmed that the earlier order—first issued on April 16, 2023 and later reiterated through a ministry memorandum on July 14, 2025—has now been withdrawn.
According to the notification, the updated instruction was issued with the consent of the Ministry of Finance, referencing a memorandum dated December 23, 2025, and has taken effect immediately “in the public interest.” The notice was published on December 29, 2025.
For airlines and travel sellers, the shift is expected to simplify fare-setting and reduce the complications that arose when converting ticket and cargo prices into taka-based headline rates—particularly for international routes where pricing systems typically rely on global reference currencies.
