Türkiye’s national flag carrier, Turkish Airlines (THY), has announced plans to construct what it says will be the world’s largest cargo terminal and in-flight catering facility, marking one of the airline’s most ambitious investments to date.
The new facility, to be developed with an investment of TL 100 billion (over $2.3 billion), was revealed by the airline on its official social media platform, NSosyal, on Friday.
“Türkiye is growing, Turkish Airlines is soaring,” the carrier said in its post, emphasizing the strategic importance of the project for both the airline and the national economy.
According to Turkish Airlines, the project is expected to create 26,000 new jobs, underscoring the airline’s pivotal role in supporting Türkiye’s employment and industrial growth. The exact location of the complex has not yet been disclosed, although Istanbul—home to the country’s two largest airports—has emerged as the most likely site.
As one of the world’s leading airlines, Turkish Airlines currently carries over 85 million passengers and handles 2 million tons of cargo annually. The company continues to expand rapidly, aiming to join the ranks of the world’s top five airlines by 2033, said CEO Bilal Ekşi earlier this week.
Ekşi noted that the airline has nearly 600 aircraft on order, which will join the fleet over the next 10 to 12 years, bringing Turkish Airlines’ total to 813 aircraft. As of the end of 2025, the carrier operated a fleet of 514 aircraft, ranking ninth globally.
Turkish Airlines also holds the distinction of being the airline that flies to the most countries in the world, serving 356 destinations across 132 countries. From January to November 2025, passenger traffic rose 8.4% year-on-year to reach 85.3 million, surpassing the total number of passengers recorded for all of 2024.
