Biman Bangladesh Airlines’ board is widely reported to have backed Boeing as the preferred option for its next phase of fleet renewal, clearing the way for formal negotiations—though a final agreement has not yet been reached.
The development marks a shift from the airline’s earlier signals that it could pursue Airbus aircraft, an idea linked to a bilateral UK–Bangladesh understanding that included aviation cooperation. That arrangement was negotiated in 2023 under former prime minister Sheikh Hasina Wazed, before her removal from power last year.
Bangladeshi media reports, including The Business Standard, say a Biman board meeting held on December 30 approved negotiations over a Boeing proposal covering 14 aircraft. The reported package includes eight 787-10 Dreamliners, two 787-9s, and four 737 MAX 8 jets. A spokesperson quoted by the outlet said the board decision authorizes the airline to begin formal talks.
Biman’s current fleet already relies heavily on Boeing aircraft, with operations featuring the 787, 777, and 737 families. The report also notes Bangladesh was among several countries hit with US tariffs earlier this year.
