Etihad Airways is celebrating a major milestone in its African operations this December, marking 20 years since it first launched flights between Abu Dhabi and Johannesburg. The South African city remains one of the airline’s most established destinations on the continent and continues to serve as a cornerstone in Etihad’s expanding global network.
Since inaugurating the route in 2005, Etihad has carried close to two million passengers between the UAE and South Africa, fostering stronger cultural, commercial, and tourism ties between the two nations. In 2025 alone, more than 100,000 travellers flew on the route, underscoring consistent demand and the market’s strategic importance to the carrier.
Today, Etihad’s nonstop services connect Johannesburg directly to the UAE capital, providing travellers with efficient onward access to destinations across the Middle East, Europe, North America, the Indian Subcontinent, and the Asia-Pacific region through Zayed International Airport.
Passengers from Johannesburg continue to popular destinations such as Jeddah, Istanbul, Mumbai, Bangkok, and Phuket, reinforcing the city’s role as a vital gateway within Etihad’s network. The route also benefits from Etihad’s expanding partnerships across Southern Africa, offering smoother regional connections.
Javier Alija, Vice President of Global Sales & Distribution at Etihad Airways, said:
“Johannesburg has been a cornerstone of our African operations for two decades. The continued strength of both passenger and business travel highlights the enduring ties between the UAE and South Africa and the vital role Etihad plays in promoting trade and tourism.
Africa remains an essential pillar of our global strategy, and we are proud to support its dynamic markets as part of our Journey 2030 growth ambitions.”
This 20-year milestone comes as Etihad accelerates its growth across Africa, a region showing robust and resilient demand for air travel. The continent’s growing population of international travellers and its deepening economic links with the UAE continue to drive this expansion.
In the past year, the airline has launched new routes to Tunis, Addis Ababa, and Nairobi, while established destinations such as Casablanca and Cairo continue to deliver solid performance. These developments further reinforce Etihad’s African network connectivity.
The carrier’s strategic partnership with Ethiopian Airlines also extends its footprint across the continent, providing travellers with greater access to destinations beyond Etihad’s own route map.
Johannesburg remains one of Etihad’s strongest corporate markets, recording a more than 50% year-on-year increase in business travel revenue in 2025. This growth reflects both the deep economic connection between the UAE and South Africa and Abu Dhabi’s continuing emergence as an international business hub.
As Etihad marks two decades of operations in Johannesburg, the airline reaffirms its commitment to expanding its African presence through new routes, strengthened partnerships, and enhanced connectivity to serve the growing demand across the continent.
