Md Shafiqur Rahman has been removed from his position as Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer (MD & CEO) of Biman Bangladesh Airlines following his arrest in a criminal case. The Ministry of Civil Aviation and Tourism issued an official order on 3 February 2026, terminating his contract in accordance with a notification issued the same day, after Shafiqur was taken into police custody.
To ensure the national carrier continues to operate smoothly, the ministry has entrusted Humayra Sultana, additional secretary (aviation and civil aviation), with the temporary responsibilities of MD and CEO until a permanent appointment is made.
The move was authorized under Section 30(c) of the Bangladesh Biman (Reinstatement and Amendment of the repealed Bangladesh Biman Order, 1972) Act, 2023, and the order was signed by Senior Assistant Secretary Mosammat Shakila Parveen with the approval of the competent authority.
Shafiqur, his wife, and two others were arrested early on 2 February over allegations of mistreatment of an 11-year-old domestic worker. Police carried out the arrests around 3:30 am at their home in Sector 9, Uttara. Dhaka Metropolitan Police Deputy Commissioner Muhammad Talebur Rahman confirmed that the case was filed after the domestic worker’s father accused them of severe physical abuse.
Uttara West Police Station’s Officer-in-Charge Kazi Md Rafiq Ahmed corroborated that the complaint named Shafiqur, his wife, and two other individuals.
Shafiqur had taken over as MD and CEO of Biman Bangladesh Airlines on 4 September 2024. He began his career at the airline in 1986 as a trainee commercial officer and rose through the ranks, holding key positions such as director of Marketing and Sales, director of Administration and Human Resources, and director of Procurement and Logistics Support. He also represented Biman abroad as country manager in Singapore, Thailand, and Greece before retiring in 2017.
