Saudi Arabia’s national airline, Saudia, is in preliminary negotiations with Boeing Co. and Airbus SE on a potential deal for at least 150 aircraft spanning both narrowbody and widebody models, in what would represent the carrier’s largest jet order to date, Bloomberg has reported, citing unnamed sources familiar with the talks.
The airline is currently evaluating different aircraft types from both manufacturers and has yet to settle on specific models or an exact breakdown of the order.
The proposed purchase would be used both to refresh part of Saudia’s existing fleet of around 200 aircraft and to expand capacity as the kingdom pursues its ambition to become a global aviation and tourism hub under the Vision 2030 strategy. Saudia has been steadily growing its order book in recent years, adding Boeing 787 Dreamliners and Airbus A321neo family jets as part of a broader fleet-modernisation and network-expansion plan.
The discussions with Boeing and Airbus are still at an early stage and may not necessarily culminate in a firm agreement, the sources cautioned. Reuters said it could not immediately verify the Bloomberg report. (Reporting by Mihika Sharma in Bengaluru; Editing by Susan Fenton)
