Emirates, the world’s first Autism-Certified Airline, has introduced its “Travel Rehearsal” initiative at Istanbul Airport (IGA), offering autistic children and their families a guided, supportive experience of air travel. The programme is part of Emirates’ global rollout across 17 airports, designed to make flying more predictable and comfortable for passengers with disabilities.
Aligned with the airline’s “Accessible Travel for All” approach, the initiative familiarizes families with airport procedures, check-in, lounge access, passport control, and aircraft environments ahead of time, helping reduce travel anxiety and build confidence.
Mehmet Gurkaynak, Emirates Country Manager for Turkey, Romania, and Bulgaria, said:
"Becoming the world’s first Autism-Certified Airline reflects Emirates’ ongoing commitment to accessible travel. Through the collaboration with IGA and our Autism Centre, we are proud to bring this initiative to Istanbul, improving the travel experience for passengers with accessibility needs."
Emirates achieved Autism-Certification after training over 30,000 cabin crew and ground staff on the autism spectrum, equipping employees with knowledge and strategies to provide personalized support.
The Travel Rehearsal programme has already been successfully implemented in cities including Dubai, Barcelona, Brussels, Budapest, Christchurch, Durban, Luanda, Madrid, Nice, Oslo, Paris, and Venice, with new destinations joining each month.
