Emirates and Aeroporti di Roma (ADR) have launched an innovative ‘Travel Rehearsal’ initiative at Rome Fiumicino Airport, aiming to break down invisible barriers and make air travel accessible for individuals with autism and sensory sensitivities. This groundbreaking event, held on February 21, is part of Emirates’ global mission to create an inclusive travel experience for all passengers, regardless of their needs.
In partnership with ANGSA Lazio APS, the initiative welcomed 12 young participants and 16 caregivers to experience a hands-on rehearsal of airport procedures, including check-in, security screening, and boarding. This initiative was designed to reduce stress and anxiety while helping participants better manage the challenges of navigating a busy airport environment, ensuring a smoother travel experience for individuals with autism or sensory sensitivities.
According to recent data, over 100 million people worldwide are affected by autism and/or sensory sensitivities, with 78% refraining from travel due to anxiety about unfamiliar environments. Emirates and ADR have come together to address this challenge by providing a safe and supportive space to simulate the travel experience. This initiative is part of a global effort to break down ‘invisible barriers’ that often prevent people with hidden disabilities from traveling.
The ‘Travel Rehearsal’ program was first introduced at Emirates’ hub in Dubai and has since been expanded to numerous cities worldwide. The launch at Rome Fiumicino Airport, Europe’s best airport for eight consecutive years, marks a major step forward in the airline’s commitment to accessibility. By choosing this strategic hub for the European debut, Emirates is setting a new international standard for inclusivity in aviation.
The event allowed participants to practice traveling through the airport alongside other passengers, helping them familiarize themselves with the layout, routines, and procedures they will encounter when traveling. This micro-experiential approach helps reduce stress for individuals with autism and sensory sensitivities, providing families with an opportunity to plan their routes and anticipate potential challenges before their actual journey.
"Every passenger deserves to travel without the fear of invisible barriers," said Marco D’ilario, Emirates Country Manager for Italy. “With this initiative, we are not just showing people how to fly; we are restoring their right to experience travel with peace of mind. The smiles at the check-in counters today are proof that a barrier-free sky is achievable.”
Veronica Pamio, Senior Vice President of External Affairs, Sustainability, and Destination Management at Aeroporti di Roma, commented, "This initiative stems from our commitment to transforming the airport experience into an accessible and empowering opportunity for everyone. By working with Emirates and ANGSA Lazio APS, we’ve created a model that not only benefits today’s participants but also offers a foundation for long-term social value and enhanced mobility for all."
The success of the ‘Travel Rehearsal’ program in Dubai and other international cities has demonstrated the effectiveness of this initiative, and its launch in Rome reaffirms the commitment to universal inclusion and ensuring all passengers can participate in the travel experience with confidence.
