Türkiye’s aviation sector continued its strong upward trajectory in 2025, with airports across the country serving 229.7 million passengers in the first 11 months of the year, according to Transport and Infrastructure Minister Abdulkadir Uraloğlu.
Citing data from the State Airports Authority, the minister said total passenger traffic — including direct transit passengers — rose 6.7% compared with the same period last year, underlining the resilience and growth of Türkiye’s air travel market.
From January to November, airports recorded 2.32 million aircraft movements, including overflights, a 9.1% year-on-year increase. Domestic flights reached 916,027, while 869,620 movements were operated on international routes. On average, around 688,000 passengers travelled by air each day — a volume Uraloğlu likened to “filling nine Atatürk Olympic Stadiums daily.”
Passenger totals included 93.8 million domestic travelers and 135.7 million international passengers, reflecting Türkiye’s role as both a key regional connector and a major global tourism destination. Cargo operations remained robust as well, with 4.74 million tonnes of freight handled over the 11-month period, including 864,880 tonnes on domestic routes and 3.87 million tonnes internationally.
Istanbul Airport once again led the country’s aviation activity. In November alone, it handled 44,704 flights and welcomed over 7 million passengers. Between January and November, the airport recorded 503,777 aircraft movements and processed 77.5 million passengers, including 16.4 million domestic and more than 61 million international travelers.
Sabiha Gökçen Airport, Istanbul’s second major hub, also delivered strong numbers, with 23,089 aircraft movements and 4.15 million passengers in November. Over the 11-month period, it handled 250,538 flights and served 44.2 million passengers, strengthening Istanbul’s position as a leading global aviation hub.
Istanbul Atatürk Airport, now largely dedicated to cargo and official traffic, registered 2,293 aircraft movements in November and 26,546 passengers from January to November.
Airports in Türkiye’s leading tourism regions continued to attract heavy traffic, processing 60.6 million passengers and 406,860 flights between January and November. Of these, 141,082 were domestic movements and 265,778 international flights, reflecting strong inbound demand for Türkiye’s coastal and resort destinations.
Antalya Airport led the sector among tourism gateways, serving 38.1 million passengers. It was followed by Izmir Adnan Menderes Airport with 11.7 million passengers, and Muğla Dalaman Airport with 5.54 million.
Milas-Bodrum Airport handled 4.3 million passengers, while Gazipaşa-Alanya Airport welcomed just under 1 million travelers.
Uraloğlu said the figures demonstrate how investments in airport infrastructure and expanded flight capacity are paying off, reinforcing Türkiye’s status as a vital hub for tourism, trade and global connectivity.
“In 11 months, the number of people traveling by air exceeded 229 million,” he noted. “Our airports continue to serve as critical gateways for tourism, trade and global connectivity.”
