Istanbul’s two main aviation hubs—IGA Istanbul Airport on the European side and Istanbul Sabiha Gökçen International Airport on the Asian side—set new passenger records in 2025, serving a combined 132 million travelers, according to Türkiye’s State Airports Authority (DHMI).
IGA Istanbul Airport handled 80.4 million passengers in the previous year and is expected to close 2025 at around 84 million. By year-end, the airport is projected to have operated approximately 547,000 flights, reinforcing its role as a major global hub.
About 48% of passengers were long-haul transfer travelers, while 52% were origin-and-destination passengers, with the airport connecting Istanbul to 330+ destinations worldwide.
The airport also marked several operational milestones in 2025, including a single-day record of 1,707 flights on July 18 and a daily passenger high of 282,835 on August 2. In April, it became Europe’s first airport to implement triple independent runway operations, a move aimed at increasing efficiency and capacity.
The number of scheduled passenger airlines operating from IGA reached a historic high of 116, with an annual passenger target of 90 million set for 2026.
On the Asian side, Sabiha Gökçen Airport reported handling over 48 million passengers across more than 270,000 flights in 2025. International travel accounted for 56% of traffic, while 44% was domestic.
Germany emerged as the most popular international market, with Ercan Airport in Northern Cyprus the most visited destination overall, and Antalya leading among domestic routes.
Sabiha Gökçen also broke daily records on September 7, logging 856 aircraft movements and 160,163 passengers. Compared with 2024, passenger traffic increased by 6% on domestic routes and more than 24% on international services.
Capacity expansion projects—including Terminal 1 renovations and major airside infrastructure upgrades—are expected to add 5.5 million passengers per year and further support growth.
