Hamad International Airport (HIA) has launched the Sunflower Program, an international initiative designed to support passengers with hidden disabilities. The program uses the Sunflower symbol as a discreet and voluntary way for travelers to indicate that they may require additional assistance during their airport journey.
In a statement issued today, HIA explained that wearing the Sunflower enables passengers to quietly signal that they may need extra time, clearer communication, or tailored support. This initiative aims to foster greater understanding and more supportive interactions throughout the passenger experience.
Francois Bourienne, Senior Vice President of Commercial, Strategy and Customer Experiences at Hamad International Airport, said that the airport remains committed to designing inclusive passenger journeys guided by the principles of autonomy, dignity, and predictability.
He noted that the Sunflower Program is part of HIA’s broader accessibility strategy, reinforcing its efforts to deliver a seamless and barrier-free airport experience. Bourienne added that, in collaboration with stakeholders, HIA will continue to invest in fit-for-purpose facilities and services to ensure accessibility for all passengers.
Meanwhile, Andy Faulkner, CEO of Topland, the exclusive Middle East partner of the Hidden Disabilities Sunflower program, welcomed Hamad International Airport’s participation. He said that HIA’s membership represents a significant step toward more inclusive and accessible travel, particularly as one of the world’s leading airports.
Faulkner emphasized that the initiative helps raise awareness of hidden disabilities, acknowledges the diverse needs of passengers and employees, and highlights the importance of staff training to ensure individuals requiring additional support are treated with understanding and respect.
As a Sunflower-enabled airport, HIA has integrated the program across key passenger touchpoints to provide a consistent and supportive experience for arriving, departing, and transit passengers. The Sunflower symbol is displayed throughout the terminal to help identify participating travelers.
In addition, teams across airport operations, Qatar Airways Group, airline partners, retail outlets, and service providers have received awareness training on the Sunflower Program. Staff are trained to recognize the symbol as an optional means through which passengers may communicate their needs. (QNA)
