Vietnam hit a new tourism landmark on December 15, welcoming its 20-millionth international visitor in a single year for the first time—an achievement officials described as a major moment in the country’s 65-year tourism development.
The milestone arrival was Karolina Agnieszka, a visitor from Poland, who landed at Phu Quoc International Airport. She was honored during a special ceremony that included greetings at the aircraft stairs, flower presentations, traditional performances, and official certificates for three notable travelers: the 19,999,999th, 20,000,000th, and 20,000,001st international arrivals of 2025.
Vietnam’s 20-millionth visitor received a gift package valued at nearly VND500 million (around US$19,000). The package included a premium pearl necklace, round-trip business-class air tickets, a five-star resort holiday, and vouchers covering Michelin-star dining, golf, and yacht excursions around southern Phu Quoc, along with priority-access cards for leisure and entertainment services.
The other two highlighted visitors each received packages worth more than VND200 million, including premium pearls and service vouchers. All passengers on the same flight were also given welcome flowers and tickets to the “Kiss of the Sea” show in Sunset Town within Phu Quoc’s special zone.
At the event, Deputy Minister of Culture, Sports and Tourism Ho An Phong said the 20-million milestone reflects the tourism sector’s recovery and momentum, particularly after the global downturn caused by the Covid-19 pandemic.
Since Vietnam fully reopened to tourism on March 15, 2022, international arrivals climbed to 12.6 million in 2023 and 17.6 million in 2024. Total foreign visitors in 2025 are expected to exceed 21 million, surpassing the 18 million recorded in 2019 before the pandemic. With estimated growth of 21% this year, Vietnam’s tourism industry has been cited by the UN World Tourism Organisation as among the world’s fastest-growing.
Phu Quoc has been one of the standout destinations driving that rebound. The island welcomed nearly 7.6 million visitors in the first 11 months of the year, including 1.6 million international arrivals—up 35% year-on-year and already above the annual target.
