Emirates has announced a major investment of AED 85 million to install more than 200 biometric-enabled cameras throughout Terminal 3 at Dubai International Airport (DXB), transforming the passenger journey with seamless facial recognition technology.
The new system allows travellers to pass through check-in, immigration, boarding gates, lounges, and aircraft boarding using only facial recognition—eliminating the need to present passports or boarding passes at multiple checkpoints.
Developed in collaboration with the General Directorate of Identity and Foreigner Affairs Dubai (GDRFAD), the initiative aims to drastically reduce processing times and enhance operational efficiency. The advanced cameras can recognize a traveller’s biometric profile from up to one metre away, enabling them to move swiftly through airport zones that previously required manual document checks.
Simple Registration for All Emirates Customers
Both UAE residents and visitors can register for the service through the Emirates app, self-service kiosks, or check-in counters. Once registered, travellers can opt to use dedicated Biometric Zones for a faster, paperless airport experience each time they travel through DXB.
“With our latest Biometrics Path development, Emirates has invested in further innovations to enhance the customer travel experience,” said Adel Al Redha, Emirates’ Deputy President and Chief Operating Officer. “Since 2017, we have worked closely with GDRFAD to adopt the latest technologies, ensuring our customers enjoy a world-class, seamless journey through Dubai International Airport.”
Lieutenant General Mohammed Ahmed Al Marri, Director General of GDRFAD Dubai, highlighted the partnership’s broader significance:
“Innovation is a cornerstone of our services at GDRFA Dubai,” he said. “By integrating artificial intelligence and biometric technologies, we continue to make travel through Dubai faster, safer, and more intuitive. Our collaboration with Emirates reflects Dubai’s spirit of public-private partnership and reinforces the UAE’s global reputation for digital excellence.”
How It Works
Step 1 – Registration
Customers can register via the Emirates app or at airport check-in desks. Registration requires Emirates Skywards membership and passport verification. Consent allows Emirates to match facial data with existing records in the GDRFAD database.
Step 2 – Biometric Check-in
Once registered, customers can check in using facial recognition at kiosks. The feature will soon extend to flight connections.
Step 3 – Smart Gate Immigration
Registered travellers can use GDRFAD’s Smart Gates at Terminal 3 for entry and exit. UAE citizens, residents, GCC nationals, and eligible visa-on-arrival visitors can breeze through immigration in seconds.
Step 4 – Biometric Lounge Access
Eligible passengers can access Emirates Lounges at Concourse B through facial recognition at five dedicated entry points.
Step 5 – Biometric Boarding
At select departure gates across Concourses A, B, and C, travellers can board flights without presenting a boarding pass. Additional biometric boarding gates will be introduced soon.
For those already holding a GDRFAD biometric record, Emirates can securely match their data once registration is complete. Visitors without a profile can create a temporary biometric record, which converts to a permanent GDRFAD profile upon arrival in Dubai.
Travellers can learn more or register through the Emirates App, which also offers other digital travel management features.
