Etihad Airways has announced a significant expansion of its widebody fleet, with the addition of 32 new Airbus aircraft, marking a key milestone in the airline's growth strategy. This move further solidifies Etihad’s position as one of the world’s fastest-growing full-service carriers.
The fleet expansion includes a mix of Airbus A350-1000s, A350 freighters (A350F), and A330-900s, sourced through both direct orders and lease commitments. Deliveries will begin in 2027, allowing Etihad to tap into one of the earliest available widebody delivery windows globally.
This latest order follows Etihad's earlier commitment in 2025 for 28 additional Boeing widebody aircraft, bringing the total number of new widebody orders for the airline this year to 60, spanning both Airbus and Boeing models.
In securing some of the last available early delivery positions, Etihad demonstrates its strategic agility, ensuring that its new aircraft arrive well ahead of typical long-haul backlog timelines. This rapid execution not only enhances the airline’s competitive advantage but also ensures a robust long-haul capacity, crucial in meeting increasing demand for premium air travel.
The combined fleet expansion will provide Etihad with increased flexibility for its medium-haul, long-haul, and cargo operations:
-
The A350-1000s will strengthen the airline's long-haul capacity.
-
The A350F freighters will enhance Etihad Cargo’s growing role in global trade.
-
The A330-900s will support mid-haul and regional growth, addressing the current global shortage of widebody aircraft.
With this order, Etihad Airways will operate a fully comprehensive Airbus wide-body fleet, including the A380, the entire A350 family (including freighters), and the A330neo.
Antonoaldo Neves, CEO of Etihad Airways, commented: “Securing 32 additional widebodies, with deliveries beginning in 2027, showcases Etihad's proactive approach in securing scarce delivery positions. These additions ensure we remain ahead of global capacity constraints, continue our growth, and enhance premium passenger experiences. This strategic move reinforces our commitment to Abu Dhabi’s aviation future and strengthens our position as a key global aviation hub.”
He added, “With a total of 60 new widebody aircraft ordered across Airbus and Boeing, Etihad is building one of the most modern, efficient, and flexible long-haul fleets in the world.”
Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, Executive Vice President of Sales for Airbus Commercial Aircraft, highlighted the continued collaboration between Airbus and Etihad, emphasizing how the A350 family and A330neo will offer unmatched efficiency and operational flexibility, supporting Etihad’s long-term development goals.
Etihad’s commitment to innovation extends to its premium onboard experience, with all new aircraft featuring next-generation cabins across First, Business, and Economy classes, as well as Viasat high-speed internet. These additions, along with ongoing cabin retrofits, ensure that Etihad’s expanding fleet offers a consistent, world-class product for its passengers.
This strategic expansion reflects Etihad's determination to maintain a competitive edge in the global aviation market, continuing to bring millions of visitors to Abu Dhabi each year while positioning the airline for sustained success in the future.
