Qatar Airways and Google have launched a groundbreaking inflight creative initiative, unveiling the aviation industry’s first “Sky Studio Challenge” powered entirely by Starlink connectivity. The experiment marks a major technological leap—proving that complete commercial films can be generated, edited, finalised, and uploaded during a single ultra-long-haul flight.
The activation took place on 17 November 2025 aboard a Qatar Airways Airbus A350 flying from Doha to Atlanta. Using Google’s latest Gemini AI video and image generation models, two full commercials were created entirely inflight. This makes the Sky Studio Challenge the world’s first project to generate, render, edit, and publish AI-produced films before touchdown.
With Starlink’s high-speed inflight broadband—comparable to home internet—creators were able to perform heavy file transfers, run cloud-based editing workflows, build complex scenes, and collaborate live with teams on the ground. Qatar Airways remains the global leader in Starlink-equipped widebody aircraft.
The challenge featured two prominent AI filmmakers: PJ Accetturo, known for his viral AI-driven ads, and Torey Kohara, a Google campaign director acclaimed for turning advanced technology into cinematic visual storytelling.
Babar Rahman, Senior Vice President of Marketing and Corporate Communications at Qatar Airways, said the achievement highlights the airline’s leadership in inflight innovation. “This first-of-its-kind challenge shows why Qatar Airways is setting new benchmarks in connectivity—innovations passengers can experience now, not years later.”
Google’s Regional Marketing Director for the Middle East and Africa, Najeeb Jarrar, said the experiment showcases the power of AI models like the Veo 3.1 video generator. “As marketers, this allows us to go from brief to launch in a matter of hours,” he said.
The Sky Studio Challenge sets a new standard for creativity at altitude, opening the door to future inflight digital content creation powered by advanced AI and high-speed connectivity.
