Boeing, Lufthansa Group and Rolls-Royce have joined forces to test a range of new aviation technologies designed to improve fuel efficiency and reduce aircraft noise as part of Boeing's 2026 ecoDemonstrator Explorer programme.
The flight-test campaign will begin later this month in Glasgow, Montana, using a Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner powered by Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 engines. Once the programme concludes in mid-August, the aircraft will be delivered to Lufthansa.
A key focus of the trials is a Next Generation engine inlet featuring a shorter, lighter design and advanced acoustic treatments. The technology is intended to reduce drag, lower aircraft weight and minimise noise while supporting the integration of more efficient future engine designs.
The partners will also evaluate Intelligent Operations flight paths that use data-driven departure and arrival procedures to optimise fuel consumption and reduce aircraft noise in communities surrounding airports.
The project is being conducted under Phase III of the U.S. Federal Aviation Administration's Continuous Lower Energy, Emissions and Noise (CLEEN) programme, which supports the development of technologies that enhance aircraft efficiency and environmental performance.
Since its launch in 2012, Boeing's ecoDemonstrator programme has tested more than 260 technologies in real-world operating conditions, helping accelerate innovations that reduce fuel consumption, emissions and noise while improving operational efficiency.
