The U.S. National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has assumed leadership of the investigation into a Ryanair Boeing 737 incident in Greece after the Greek authorities delegated responsibility for the inquiry to the U.S. agency.
The incident occurred on July 10 shortly after the aircraft departed Thessaloniki for Germany. According to the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) and video evidence, a component from one of the aircraft's engines detached and struck a cabin window, causing it to shatter. The resulting loss of cabin pressure forced the aircraft to make an emergency landing.
During the incident, Serbian passenger Ljubisa Karovic was partially pulled through the damaged window before fellow passengers managed to hold him inside the aircraft. He sustained injuries and was taken to hospital for treatment.
The event has drawn comparisons with two Southwest Airlines Boeing 737 Next Generation (NG) engine failures in 2016 and 2018. In the 2018 accident, a passenger was killed after being partially ejected through a broken window caused by a failed engine fan blade.
However, FAA Administrator Bryan Bedford told Reuters that preliminary findings do not currently indicate the Ryanair incident mirrors the circumstances of the 2018 Southwest accident.
Following that fatal event, the NTSB recommended that Boeing redesign the fan cowl structure on 737 NG aircraft, prompting the FAA to issue an airworthiness directive in 2023 requiring modifications by 2028.
Bedford said the latest investigation has prompted the FAA to reassess its response to the earlier Southwest incident to determine whether any safety issues may have been overlooked, while cautioning that it is too early to draw conclusions.
Southwest Airlines said it has already completed the required modifications on approximately 80% of its affected 737 NG fleet and remains on track to meet the FAA's July 2028 compliance deadline.
Ryanair's Boeing 737 NG fleet is powered by CFM56 engines manufactured by CFM International. The 737 NG is the generation that preceded Boeing's current 737 MAX family.
