Riyadh Air has launched its inaugural nonstop service between Riyadh and Madrid, marking the start of the first scheduled direct air link between the Saudi and Spanish capitals.
The airline's first flight, RX0531, arrived at Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas Airport, officially opening the new route. The service was introduced in partnership with Saudi Arabia's Air Connectivity Program to support the Kingdom's aviation growth strategy under the Aviation Program and Saudi Vision 2030.
The Madrid launch follows the carrier's seasonal service to Málaga, which began on July 14 and will operate until September 8, 2026, further expanding Riyadh Air's presence in Spain.
An official ceremony was held at Madrid-Barajas Airport to mark the inaugural flight, attended by Riyadh Air Chief Executive Officer Tony Douglas, the CEO of Atlético de Madrid, and senior representatives from the airline and the airport.
The new Riyadh-Madrid route is expected to strengthen business, tourism and cultural ties between Saudi Arabia and Spain. Around 250 Spanish companies currently operate in the Kingdom, while the direct connection is also expected to enhance access to Riyadh as it develops into a regional business and logistics hub under Saudi Vision 2030.
The launch also reinforces Riyadh Air's presence in Spanish sport through its partnership with Atlético de Madrid, where the airline serves as the club's principal sponsor, official partner of both the men's and women's teams, and naming-rights partner of Riyadh Air Metropolitano Stadium.
Coinciding with the route launch, Riyadh Air announced the signing of a strategic memorandum of understanding (MoU) with Spanish carrier Air Europa. Subject to regulatory approvals, the agreement is intended to improve passenger connectivity between the airlines' networks by using Madrid-Barajas Airport as a gateway to destinations across Spain, Southern Europe and Latin America.
The proposed partnership includes plans to develop interline services, explore codeshare opportunities, align frequent flyer programmes and cooperate in air cargo operations and digital innovation.
Commenting on the launch, Riyadh Air CEO Tony Douglas said the new Madrid service, together with the Málaga route and the Air Europa partnership, represents another milestone in the airline's strategy to connect Riyadh with major global destinations while offering travellers a direct gateway to Saudi Arabia's growing tourism and business opportunities.
