Vietnam Airlines has signed a memorandum of understanding with Airbus for the purchase of five A350-900 widebody aircraft, the airline announced on Friday, confirming an earlier Reuters report.
The aircraft are scheduled to be delivered in 2033 and 2034. Vietnam Airlines did not disclose the financial value of the agreement.
The carrier said expanding its widebody fleet by 30 aircraft beyond 2030 is a strategic priority under its long-term fleet development plan. The new A350-900s are expected to support the airline’s efforts to expand its international network.
Benoît de Saint-Exupéry, Airbus executive vice president of sales for commercial aircraft, said the A350-900’s long-range capabilities and operational efficiency would support Vietnam Airlines’ international growth plans in the coming years.
The agreement was one of several deals signed between Vietnam and France during Vietnamese leader To Lam’s visit to Paris for the International Space Summit.
French President Emmanuel Macron said on Thursday that France and Vietnam were also nearing an agreement for three NH90 helicopters manufactured by Airbus Helicopters.
Separately, Vietravel Airlines signed a letter of intent with Airbus covering the purchase of 20 A220 aircraft and 30 A321 jets. According to the Vietnamese government, deliveries under that agreement are expected to begin in 2029.
