Bangladesh is planning to acquire 10 aircraft from European manufacturer Airbus for its national carrier, Biman Bangladesh Airlines, as the government moves forward with an expansion of the airline’s fleet.
Civil Aviation and Tourism Minister M. Rashiduzzaman Millat said on Tuesday that an agreement with Airbus could be signed as early as October.
The proposed deal comprises four A350-900 wide-body aircraft and six A321neo narrow-body jets. The Airbus order would come on top of Biman’s existing commitments to Boeing, which now total 25 aircraft.
Those Boeing commitments include the recently announced purchase of five 787-10 Dreamliners and six 737-8 MAX aircraft.
Under the planned fleet strategy, the A350-900s would primarily be used on high-demand routes to the Middle East, as well as long-haul services to Europe and North America. The A321neos would be assigned mainly to regional and shorter-haul routes.
Biman currently operates a fleet of 19 aircraft, consisting largely of Boeing jets and Dash-8 turboprop aircraft. According to Minister Millat, the airline carries slightly more than 20% of Bangladesh’s air passengers.
