Emirates Airline has announced the suspension of its Dubai–Madagascar flights until further notice due to escalating civil unrest in the island nation.
In a statement published on its website Sunday, the carrier said flights EK707 and EK708 — operating between Dubai and Antananarivo via Seychelles — have been cancelled. Passengers affected by the suspension are being rebooked, with updated details sent via email.
“Customers impacted by the cancelled flights from Dubai to Antananarivo will be rebooked, and updated booking details will be sent to the email address registered with the reservation,” Emirates said, advising travellers to verify their contact information through the Manage Your Booking portal for timely updates.
The airline confirmed it is closely monitoring the situation and will resume services once conditions permit.
Other airlines follow suit
Air France and Air Austral have also temporarily suspended flights to Madagascar. Air France announced it was halting services between Paris Charles de Gaulle and Antananarivo until at least October 13, citing safety concerns. Meanwhile, Air Austral suspended its Reunion Island–Madagascar flights on Saturday, though some operations resumed Sunday.
Unrest in Madagascar
The flight suspensions follow growing instability in Madagascar after an army unit near the capital, Antananarivo, mutinied on Sunday, claiming control over the nation’s military. The rebellion comes amid youth-led demonstrations by a group calling itself “Gen Z Madagascar”, which has been protesting against alleged corruption, nepotism, and government mismanagement since September 25.
The United Nations has reported at least 22 deaths and dozens injured during the protests, marking the most serious unrest in Madagascar in recent years. President Andry Rajoelina has denounced the mutiny as an “illegal attempt to seize power.
