Berlin Brandenburg Airport (BER) has suspended most departures on Thursday after snow, freezing rain and black ice severely disrupted operations, leading to widespread flight cancellations and delays.
Airport authorities said no take-offs were possible for several hours in the morning because rapidly freezing rain made it impossible to safely de-ice aircraft. While many departures were cancelled or rescheduled, arriving flights were initially still able to land, although some inbound services were later cancelled as conditions worsened. The airport warned that disruption would continue into the evening and urged passengers not to travel to the airport without first checking their flight status with airlines or online.
Germany’s national weather service issued warnings for Berlin and the surrounding state of Brandenburg, citing a high risk of black ice caused by freezing rain and sub-zero temperatures. The icy conditions also hit roads and rail services in eastern Germany, with long-distance train routes and local transport reporting delays and cancellations. Authorities have appealed to residents and travelers to avoid non-essential journeys and to expect continued disruption until the weather improves.
In a post on X, the airport said: “Due to black ice on 5.2.2026, no more takeoffs and landings at #BER possible. Please check your flight status with your airline for 6.2.2026.”
