King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh is a major aviation hub serving Saudi Arabia and the wider region. Since opening in 1983, the airport has expanded alongside the capital’s urban and economic development, accommodating increasing demand for domestic and international air travel.
Located approximately 35 kilometres north of central Riyadh, the airport covers nearly 225 square kilometres. Its infrastructure includes five main passenger terminals, a royal terminal and two private aviation terminals, providing facilities for a broad range of travellers.
The airport has 40 passenger boarding bridges and parking facilities capable of accommodating more than 11,600 vehicles, supporting passenger movement and ground operations.
Air traffic is managed through a central control tower, while two parallel runways, each measuring 4,260 metres (13,980 feet), allow the airport to handle various aircraft types and operate around the clock.
Extensive Airline Network
King Khalid International Airport serves as a major gateway to an extensive air transport network. More than 64 domestic and international airlines connect Riyadh with over 121 destinations worldwide.
The airport handles more than 299,000 flights annually and serves over 40 million passengers each year, underscoring its importance to Saudi Arabia’s aviation sector.
Responsibility for managing and operating the airport rests with Riyadh Airports Company, established in 2016 as part of Saudi Arabia’s aviation sector privatization programme.
The company oversees airport operations and is working to modernize and expand existing infrastructure while introducing additional services and facilities. These initiatives aim to improve the passenger experience, strengthen operational efficiency and prepare the airport for Riyadh’s future transportation needs.
