Bahrain is working to reopen visa facilities for Bangladeshi citizens in phases, according to the country’s Deputy Interior Minister, Adel bin Khalifa Al Fadhel. The announcement came during a meeting with Bangladesh’s Foreign Adviser, Touhid Hossain, on the sidelines of the 21st Manama Dialogue in Bahrain.
Bahrain, which hosts around 300,000 Bangladeshi expatriates, halted recruitment from Bangladesh in 2018. During the meeting, Touhid urged Bahrain to resume the issuance of visas for Bangladeshi businesspeople, professionals, and skilled and semi-skilled workers to boost economic engagement and strengthen people-to-people ties. He also requested that family visas be reinstated for Bangladeshi residents already living in the Gulf nation.
Acknowledging the contribution of Bangladeshi workers to Bahrain’s economy, Al Fadhel said the government is taking steps to reopen visa services gradually.
The two sides also discussed signing an agreement on the transfer of sentenced persons between the two countries.
On the sidelines of the Manama Dialogue, Adviser Touhid held several bilateral meetings, including with Bahrain’s Foreign Minister, Dr Abdullatif bin Rashid Alzayani. He commended Bahrain’s role in fostering peace and stability in the Middle East and expressed Bangladesh’s willingness to host the next round of Political Consultations in Dhaka in 2025. Touhid also invited Alzayani to visit Dhaka to lead the Bahraini delegation.
In a separate meeting with Qatar’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Sultan bin Saad bin Sultan Al Muraikhi, Touhid reaffirmed Bangladesh’s solidarity with Qatar amid any threats to its security and sovereignty. The two leaders discussed bilateral issues, with Qatar reiterating its support for resolving the Rohingya crisis.
Touhid also met with the Secretary General of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA), focusing on how the organisation could play a stronger role in tackling political challenges and enhancing cooperation across Asia.
The 21st Manama Dialogue, a high-profile international security conference, is currently underway in Bahrain, bringing together global policymakers and leaders to deliberate on key regional and international issues.
