Thailand is anticipating a significant boost in tourism revenue during this year’s Songkran festival, with officials projecting total earnings of approximately 30.4 billion baht. The figure represents a 6 per cent increase compared to 2025, reflecting strong travel demand during the Thai New Year celebrations.
According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the five-day festival period from April 11 to 15 is expected to attract around 500,000 international visitors, a 4 per cent rise year-on-year. These visitors are forecast to contribute about 8.1 billion baht to the country’s tourism income.
Domestic tourism is also set to play a major role. Thai residents are projected to make nearly six million trips during the holiday period, marking a 7 per cent increase from last year. Local travel is expected to generate approximately 22.3 billion baht in revenue.
In Bangkok and surrounding central regions, authorities recorded over 558,000 visitors across six major event locations as of April 12. Among them, the Songkran celebrations at Siam Square attracted the highest turnout, drawing an estimated 183,500 people. Government spokesperson Lalida Persvivatana noted that more than 90 events were organised across the capital alone, contributing to the strong participation levels.
Outside the capital, key tourist destinations are also reporting high expectations. The southern province of Phuket is projected to welcome nearly 149,690 visitors, generating around 4.1 billion baht in tourism income.
In eastern Thailand, popular destinations such as Chonburi and Pattaya are extending the festive season through Wan Lai events—large-scale water celebrations that typically continue beyond the main Songkran dates and help sustain visitor activity into late April.
Meanwhile, northern regions led by Chiang Mai have seen strong engagement in traditional Pi Mai Muang festivities, highlighting the continued appeal of cultural celebrations alongside modern attractions.
Overall, officials expect the combination of large-scale public events, cultural traditions, and extended celebrations across regions to drive tourism growth and strengthen Thailand’s economy during the Songkran period.
