The UAE passport has climbed to the eighth most powerful in the world in 2025, surpassing both the United States and Canada, according to the latest Henley Passport Index. UAE passport holders now enjoy visa-free or visa-on-arrival access to 184 destinations globally, marking a significant rise from 11th place last year and an increase of 151 countries since the index began in 2006. This achievement reflects the UAE’s expanding global mobility and diplomatic openness.
In contrast, the United States passport fell out of the top 10 most powerful for the first time in its 20-year history, now ranking 12th alongside Malaysia, with access to 180 countries and territories. Canada ranked ninth, allowing entry to 183 destinations. Factors contributing to the decline in the US passport's ranking include stricter immigration policies and visa reciprocity issues, where the US offers limited visa-free entry to other nationalities compared to what its citizens receive abroad.
Asian countries dominate the top ranks, with Singapore leading at the top spot, offering visa-free access to 193 destinations, followed by South Korea (190), and Japan (189). European countries such as Germany, Italy, Luxembourg, Spain, and Switzerland tie for fourth place, with visa-free access to 188 countries. The UAE joined the ranks of several European nations tied for eighth, including the UK, Croatia, Estonia, Slovakia, and Slovenia.
The Henley Passport Index, which tracks the travel freedom of 199 passports across 227 destinations worldwide using data from the International Air Transport Association, highlights global shifts in mobility and soft power. It notes that countries embracing openness and international cooperation, like the UAE, are climbing the rankings, while others resting on past privileges are experiencing declines.
In the Middle East, other countries’ passport rankings vary: Bahrain is 88th, Oman 87th, Kuwait 99th, and Qatar holds 111th place. At the bottom of the list, Afghanistan remains the weakest, offering visa-free access to just 24 countries.
This ranking milestone for the UAE passport underscores its growing international stature and the increasing global mobility of its citizens, reflecting strong diplomatic ties and broadening travel freedom.thenationalnews+5
