India has begun issuing chip-enabled e-Passports, upgrading the traditional booklet with an embedded RFID chip and antenna designed to better protect traveller identity data and reduce passport fraud. The initiative is part of the Ministry of External Affairs’ broader modernisation under Passport Seva Programme (PSP) V2.0, aligning India’s travel documents with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) standards.
What is an e-Passport?
The e-Passport looks like a regular passport but includes a chip that stores key details securely for authentication at border checkpoints—supporting quicker and more reliable verification at immigration.
Who can apply?
Any Indian citizen eligible for a regular passport—new applicants or renewals—can apply. Rollout is being implemented in phases, so availability may vary by passport office/centre.
How to apply
The process remains broadly the same:
- Apply via the Passport Seva portal
- Pay the fee and book an appointment at a PSK/POPSK
- Visit the centre for document verification and biometrics as required
- Receive the chip-enabled passport after processing
Fees (same as standard passport booklets)
Official fee structure lists:
- ₹1,500 for a 36-page booklet
- ₹2,000 for a 60-page booklet
Additional charges apply for expedited options like Tatkal.
