Passengers were unable to board a Ryanair flight from Milan Bergamo to Manchester last week after delays at passport control caused them to miss the gate closure, the airline has confirmed.
Ryanair stated that affected travellers would have been allowed to board had they reached the gate before it closed, indicating that the disruption was linked to processing delays rather than airline operations.
The incident has been attributed to the rollout of the European Entry-Exit System (EES), a digital border management system that has led to extended waiting times at several airports across Europe. The system requires non-European Union nationals, including British citizens, to provide biometric data such as facial scans and fingerprints, which are then used for verification during future crossings of the Schengen Area.
The implementation of EES began in October and was scheduled to become fully operational on April 10. However, authorities have reported uneven progress across different European locations, contributing to operational challenges.
This is not the first such occurrence. Earlier this month, passengers travelling with EasyJet from Milan Linate to Manchester were also unable to board their flight under similar circumstances.
Video footage reviewed by the BBC from Milan Bergamo shows large crowds forming at the airport, with passengers expressing frustration over extended waiting times and a lack of timely information from airport staff. Travellers reported being held at the gate for more than an hour while seeking guidance on how to proceed.
