Bangladesh’s aviation security has achieved major international acclaim after two of the country’s busiest airports earned outstanding marks in a recent audit by the United Kingdom’s Department for Transport (DfT).
Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport (HSIA) in Dhaka scored 93% overall — including a flawless 100% in the Additional Measures Assessment for Cargo — in the DfT’s August 2025 inspection. Osmani International Airport (OIA) in Sylhet performed even better, with an overall score of 94% and a perfect result in cargo security.
Inspectors from the DfT, who oversee airport assessments for flights to and from the UK, expressed “deep satisfaction” with the Civil Aviation Authority of Bangladesh’s (CAAB) preparedness and overall performance. The DfT’s overseas evaluation program, in operation since 2017, verifies that airports linked to the UK maintain strict standards for both passenger and cargo security.
CAAB hailed the results as a “milestone” for Bangladesh’s aviation sector, calling it proof of alignment with international best practices. “This achievement reflects the robustness of our aviation security system, which has direct implications for national and economic security,” the agency said in a statement.
The success marks a dramatic turnaround from 2016, when the UK and EU imposed restrictions on direct cargo shipments from Dhaka due to inadequate screening. Those measures forced exporters to route goods through third countries, increasing costs and delays.
Since then, CAAB and airport authorities have invested heavily in modern infrastructure, advanced screening technology, and personnel training. Upgrades include Explosive Detection Systems (EDS) and Explosive Detection Dogs (EDD) to strengthen cargo operations.
Officials said the new scores confirm Bangladesh has addressed previous weaknesses. “This recognition from the UK assures global partners that our aviation and cargo security meet international expectations,” CAAB stated, adding that the achievement will bolster confidence among foreign airlines, regulators, and investors while reducing the risk of future trade restrictions.
The authority credited “visionary leadership, a steadfast regulatory framework, and effective implementation of security measures” for the accomplishment, pledging to maintain Bangladesh’s status as one of South Asia’s most compliant and trusted air transport hubs.
