Emirates has been named the only airline to earn Gold Tier status in New York JFK Airport’s 2024 Fly Quiet Programme, with a top score of 92.9, far surpassing other participating carriers. The Fly Quiet Programme, developed by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, recognises airlines that minimise their noise footprint through modern aircraft technology, adherence to noise abatement procedures, and optimal runway usage.
The accolade highlights Emirates’ long-standing commitment to reducing noise at one of the world’s busiest and most complex aviation hubs. Since the initiative’s launch, the airline’s Flight Operations team has worked closely with the Port Authority to exceed programme requirements.
The Gold Tier award adds to Emirates’ growing list of environmental achievements, following previous Silver Tier recognition at Newark (EWR) and the Chairperson’s Award at San Francisco (SFO) for noise management excellence.
All aircraft in Emirates’ all-widebody fleet meet or exceed ICAO Chapter 4 and Chapter 14 noise standards, achieving an average 12 EPNdB margin above regulatory limits. With its high-capacity, long-range operations, the airline transports over 1.75 million passenger-kilometres per sector, optimising both efficiency and noise output.
For instance, while Emirates’ Airbus A380 can carry 500 passengers with a single arrival and departure, smaller aircraft operating the same route may require multiple flights and additional stops—creating several more noise events. This high-capacity model significantly reduces the cumulative noise impact while maintaining essential global connectivity.
Beyond its operational efficiencies, Emirates’ strategy underscores a deep commitment to community well-being and environmental responsibility. The airline’s approach to noise reduction includes:
- Strict adherence to Noise Abatement Departure Procedures (NADP) and local curfews, embedded within standard flight operations.
- Proactive use of Noise Preferential Runways whenever conditions allow, ensuring safer and quieter takeoffs and landings.
- Transparent monitoring and accountability, with mandatory crew reports for any procedural deviations, ensuring continuous performance improvement.
- Ongoing investment in quieter, more fuel-efficient aircraft, ensuring compliance with the latest international noise standards.
- Collaboration with airport authorities and regulators, contributing to roundtables, best-practice sharing, and transparent communication with communities.
Through this multi-faceted strategy, Emirates continues to demonstrate leadership in sustainable aviation, reinforcing its mission to make the skies quieter while connecting people, economies, and cultures around the world.
