Etihad Airways, the national airline of the United Arab Emirates, has officially launched daily flights connecting Abu Dhabi’s Zayed International Airport (AUH) with Addis Ababa Bole International Airport (ADD), marking its debut in the Ethiopian market.
The inaugural flights operated at full capacity in both directions, highlighting strong travel demand between the two capitals. The new route also signals the formal activation of Etihad’s joint venture with Ethiopian Airlines, announced earlier this year, aimed at enhancing air connectivity between Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.
Under the partnership, both airlines will coordinate flight schedules, jointly develop routes, and expand collaboration in areas such as loyalty programs, training, and cargo operations. Passengers will benefit from more seamless travel options and greater network access.
Etihad CEO Antonoaldo Neves said the new service “creates a bridge between two regions with expanding connections and growing economic relations,” adding that the joint venture will “redefine connectivity between Africa, the Middle East, and Asia.”
Through the alliance, Etihad passengers can now reach more than 55 destinations across 33 African countries via Addis Ababa, while Ethiopian Airlines customers gain access to over 20 destinations across Asia, Australia, and the Middle East through Abu Dhabi.
The launch forms a key part of Etihad’s growing African network, which will also see increased frequencies to Nairobi, Casablanca, and Johannesburg, along with new routes to Tunis and Algiers. The airline also plans to resume seasonal flights to Zanzibar in June 2026.
Addis Ababa becomes Etihad’s 10th new destination in 2025, with 20 more routes set to launch by 2026 as the carrier continues its global expansion strategy.
